For David Gapinski, a senior standout on the Georgia Tech swimming and diving team, the pool has been both his battlefield and his proving ground—a place where he transformed pressure into purpose.
Hailing from St. John’s, Florida, Gapinski didn’t grow up in the shadow of a storied swim program. His club team had little history of success, and the expectations were low. But for Gapinski, that was all the motivation he needed. “I was underestimated for most of my career,” he says. “But those moments of doubt? They became my fuel.”
That fuel propelled him to become the first male swimmer from his club to compete at a Power Four school. At Georgia Tech, Gapinski has emerged as a cornerstone of the Yellow Jackets’ program, specializing in freestyle and butterfly events.
His times speak for themselves: 19.72 in the 50 free, 43.62 in the 100 free, and a blistering 1:39.63 in the 200 free. His versatility shines in the butterfly, with times of 48.24 in the 100 fly and 1:46.49 in the 200 fly.
But Gapinski’s impact goes beyond the numbers. He’s been instrumental in rewriting Georgia Tech’s record books, helping break the program record in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:50.18. His contributions also earned him a spot at the 2023-24 NCAA Championships as part of the 400 free relay team.
These aren’t just accolades—they’re milestones in a journey defined by resilience and an unrelenting drive to succeed.
Yet, even the strongest face moments of doubt. After his freshman year, Gapinski found himself questioning everything. The grind of collegiate swimming—the early mornings, the endless laps, the pressure to perform—had taken its toll. “I thought about walking away,” he admits. “The mental and physical toll was overwhelming.”
But Gapinski didn’t walk away. With the support of his coaches, teammates, and family, he rediscovered his passion for the sport. He returned to the pool not just as a swimmer, but as a leader—a fighter who had been tested and emerged stronger.
Off the deck, Gapinski’s influence is equally profound. He’s volunteered as a swim instructor with the Shawn D. Delfius Foundation, providing free swim lessons to children and adults. He’s also worked as a Swim America instructor and staffed the Bartram Trail Performing Arts Camp, proving that his impact extends far beyond the pool.
As he prepares to close this chapter of his life, Gapinski reflects on the journey that shaped him. “Pressure doesn’t crush diamonds—it creates them,” he says. “My journey has been about embracing challenges, pushing through adversity, and coming out stronger on the other side.
